We rescued not arrested El-Zakzaky and wife-Army

The Nigeria Army has put to rest the rumours making the rounds that its officers and men arrested Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and killed his wife at his residence in Zaria noting that nothing of the sort happened.

According to The General Officer Commanding (GOC)1 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Adeniyi Oyebade the Islamic Cleric and his wife were rescued alive during a bloody clash between members of the sect and soldiers, adding that they were in protective custody.

Speaking at Press Conference, he narrated how members of the Sect attacked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai who was on his way to pay a visit to the Emir of Zazzau.

According to him, the Shiite members blocked the Chief of Army Staff’s convoy along Sokoto Road in Zaria and attacked the vehicles with dangerous weapons.

He revealed that despite repeated pleas by Senior Officers for the sect members to leave the road, they refused and the soldiers were left with no choice but to apply minimum force resulting in casualties on both sides. He noted that the plan to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff was premeditated and planned.

Noting for many years, the Sect members have taken laws into their hands within the North West Zone where they constantly unleash terror on innocent citizens within the location of their shrines and activities, and disrupt their daily lives. He warned that that security forces would no longer condone such action.

Also speaking at the occasion, Mr Garba Umar, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police noted that the Shiite Members had never obtained any police permit or respected any constituted authority whenever they were carrying out their functions. He said that his men will unite with other law enforcement agencies to stop the culture of impunity.
