SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: NEWLY-COMMISSIONED AIRCONDITIONED RAILWAY COACHES SITTING IDLE IN IDDO WHILE CUSTOMERS SUFFER

Weeks after the delivery and commissioning of five air-condition coaches by Vice-President Namadi Sambo,  the coaches owned by the Nigeria Railway Corporation are lying idle at the Railway Compound, Iddo, Ebute Metta, Lagos.
Our correspondent who like many other commuters had gone to enjoy a jolly ride on the much hyped air-conditioned coaches was massively disappointed. He met the Coaches gathering dust while many commuters were groaning.

We were told by some officials that the reason for the delay in the take-off of this much-needed transformation of the rail sector  was allegedly because the narrow gauge railway system on which these coaches were to run have not been completed.

This setback was not mentioned when the Vice President with a lot of fanfare launched the air-conditioned coaches on behalf of the President, he noted that the revamping the Railways was a major priority for the Federal Government.

According to him ““My experience here today buttresses the full resolve of this administration to bring Nigeria at par with other railway services available globally by constantly upgrading and overhauling the system and component. As you are fully aware, this administration accord top priority for the development of infrastructure as a key component of its transformation agenda”
The ongoing railway rehabilitation and modernisation programme will continue to be executed by the federal government using the combination of funding from regular budget, the SURE-P intervention budget as well as concessionary loans for partners such as China Exim Bank and other banks which are currently part-financing other railway projects in the country including the Kaduna-Abuja and Lagos Ibadan railway project.

Meanwhile, our correspondent also found out that since the arrival of the new coaches, the Railway authorities for no justifiable reason had increased the fare from Iddo to Ijoko from N150 to N230 while the new Coaches, our sources revealed will be a N750 per passenger!
