Saraki backs women, says Gender Equality Bill will be presented again

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has allayed the fears of Nigerian women concerning yesterday’s throwing out of the Gender Equality and Oppportnity Bill by the Senate when it came up for second reading.

The action of the Senate against the bill sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi has elicited furore from women, but Senator Saraki has assured them that the bill will certainly be allowed back in the Red Chamber.

Taking to Twitter, He stated “met with Senator Biodun Olujimi and Senator Bwacha this morning before plenary to find mutual ground on #GEOBILL. He noted that some of the areas Senators disagreed with in the bill included inheritance, widowhood and divorce.

For those who were frustrated that he did not do more to save the bill, he stated “Senators can lobby colleagues for votes but as Senate President, I’m only allowed to vote when the choice is not clear. He agrees with many that as a nation, we needed more women to run for office and in his words ” The preparation must start now”.
