N78million website: I never signed a cheque as Governor-Fashola

Former Governor of Lagos, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN once again affirmed his innocence regarding the controversial N78million price tag for website approved during his administration.

Fashola while answering questions as a Ministerial nominee used the opportunity of a question by Senator Abaribe to clear the air on the issue of the website, the building of a borehole for N300million and loyalty, which is a veiled reference to his relationship with former boss and APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The Former Governor who was grilled for over an hour noted that there were institutional processes in place in Lagos. In his words “I do not know for other states, but I never signed a cheque. I or my commissioners never signed cheques. I do not award contracts there is a tender’s board that does that.

He went on to state that there is procurement process in Lagos, and that usually when the state was making any purchases, the value is determined by that agency and usually it is adhered to.

On the inflated cost of some projects, he said that costs that are determined at the time of conceptualization of a project can actually differ when the contractor gets on site. He gave the example of the road in Ajegunle which the government saw as a laterite road that it only had to expand and tar. But when the contractor was mobilized to site, they discovered that the road was originally constructed on a layers of refuse. The contractor therefore had to do a variation.

Speaking loyalty, Fashola stuttered a bit, but soon regained his composure to state that the true worth of loyalty can only be known when it is tested. He noted that loyalty can even mean taking a bullet for your child and gave the example of woman whom the state had agreed to sponsor for a kidney transplant. “All was ready except that they needed a donor. She had two daughters and each of them matched, but they refused to donate their kidneys for their mum”

Adding “We should pray that our loyalty should not be tested. I always pray that my loyalty should not be tested. I have remained loyal to issues and causes. Nobody can fairly accuse me of giving my word and going back on my word. I have remained loyal to assignments I have signed to”

On security, he stated that it is one of the most important functions of government. Taking the Senators through how his administration revamped the security architecture of Lagos, he insisted that there was a need to decentralize the police and actually made a case for the establishment of the state police.
