Mosque razed, 5 killed as pro-Biafra protesters go on rampage

Mayhem was visited on the popular commercial city, Onitsha when the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) protesters went violent burning  the Friday Mosque in Onitsha and leading to the death of five people.

Interestingly, markets, banks and other business activities were shut down  around the town to avoid being damaged by the IPOB members and soldiers who were stationed at strategic positions were not touched as they kept on maintaining the peace with irate protesters.
Bonfires were seen at Old and New Market Roads, Ogbommanu Junction, Savoy, Nkpor Junction, Afor-Nkpor, Bridge Head, Oguta Road among others.
Reacting, the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful said: “the soldiers killed four of our men at the Bridge Head Market at about 1:30am this morning without committing any offence.
“The soldiers came with the police, civil defence, DSS and others, attacked our men when we were not violent.
“We will continue the protest in Onitsha tomorrow unless the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is released by President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.
On the burning of the mosque,  one of the leaders of the protesters, Ikenna Madu, confirmed to BBC Hausa that the Friday mosque was actually set ablaze by persons other than the protesters.
He said none of the protesters was involved in setting the mosque ablaze, because they have been cautioning their members on taking actions like that.
Mr Madu however said the culprits might be people who disguised as members of the pro-Biafra protesters, so as to tarnish the group’s image.
Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase has ordered an increase in the number of police officers in the region to stem the protest.
