Man Pretends To Be In Coma For Two Years To Dupe Neighbour

A conman who pretended to be quadriplegic and comatose for two years has been jailed.

Alan Knight, 47, from Swansea, swindled £40,000 from his elderly neighbour and then claimed he was unable to move from the neck down in an attempt to evade justice.

But police caught the fraudster after he was seen by doctors wiping his face and eating, and on CCTV pushing a trolley around a supermarket, and was jailed for four and a half years after admitting to theft and forgery.

‘[Knight is] as dishonest a man as I have ever come across,’ said Judge Paul Thomas QC at Swansea Crown Court.

Last month, Knight’s court case was told he was living on benefits after suffering a terrible neck injury in a fall that had caused him to have seizures and left him in a comatose state.

But it emerged that the 47-year-old was attempting to escape prosecution following an elaborate three-year fraud that drained neighbour Ivor Richards of his entire life savings and shares.

The court heard how the father-of-three’s wife, Helen, kept up the charade by ‘caring’ for her ‘comatose’ husband.

Mr Thomas QC said an aggravating feature was Knight’s claim that his estranged son was responsible for the theft, with an investigation finding it to be entirely without foundation.
