Is South African Government punishing Dangote over MTN?

Story by Leke Adeosun

Is the South African Government taking the problems that its top company, MTN Group is having in Nigeria on Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote?

This is the question industry watchers are pondering about with yesterday’s announcement that Dangote has pulled out of the board of Dangote Flour Mills and would also ask three other directors Arnold Ekpe, Olakunle Sijuwade and Asue Ighodalo to pull out. This is strange because Dangote has ten per cent equity in the business.

But just when that news was still being accessed another information trickled into our newsroom that Dangote had cancelled the planned opening of its factory in South Africa which was planned for next week.

We have it on good authority that many friends of the Billionaire businessmen had been informed of the trip, so they were surprised when information came that it would no longer happen. And no explanation was given.

If one considers but events, it means there is something fishy going on in South Africa, and some are already alluding to the fact that the South Africans may just beĀ  giving the top Nigerian investor a hard time because of the obvious infraction of MTN in Nigeria-a situation that some believe may actually spark a diplomatic row.
