How Kidnapped Rivers Varsity VC Regained Freedom

Almost one week in captivity, the Vice Chancellor of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Professor Rosamund Green-Osahagulu, who was abducted last Thursday by unknown gunmen on her way home in Port Harcourt after the close of work has regained her freedom.

It was gathered that the VC escaped from the captivity when her abductors abandoned her and fled for fear that the anti-kidnapping unit of the state Police Command was closing in on them.

When contacted on telephone, Ahmad Muhammad, the Rivers Command of Public Relations Officer confirmed her freedom, stating that she was hale and hearty and had since been reunited with her family.

“Truly, she has regained her freedom sometime in the evening yesterday (Friday). It seemed her abductors sensed we were closing on them thereby making them lost concentration on her that led to her escape”, Muhammad said.

Though the police was silence on whether ransom was paid by her family or terms on which she was released, it has been observed that such high profile kidnap in the state has never gone without some degree of ransom.

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is the second state-owned university in Rivers built after the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST.

Professor Rosamund Green Osahagulu was appointed vice chancellor by the immediate past administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi after upgrading the institution from College of Education to University of Education.

Only recently the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has decried the rise in the abduction cases in Zone Six, comprising, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River and Ebonyi.

The Police boss had as a result suspended the annual leave for officers and men directing the commands to reduce the rising wave of kidnapping in the zone and across other states of the federation
