Globacom didn’t lose CAF Awards, it pulled out-Insiders reveal

Contrary to insinuations making the rounds, Nigeria’s telecommunications giant, Globacom did not lose the sponsorship deal for the yearly Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, The Boss can authoritatively reveal.

We gathered from multiple sources who are insiders that Globacom actually pulled out from continuing the lead sponsorship arrangement and it had made this known to  CAF and its officials since March 2017.

Our sources said that Glo had the right of first refusal and did not deem it fit to continue for undisclosed reasons after sponsoring for years, raising the bar and bringing back glamour to the continent’s most prestigious Awards ceremony.

We are also told that there was a very good working relationship between Globacom and CAF and whenever the company decides to get involved again, it would not be a problem because the parting of ways was not acrimonious.

In 2005, Globacom and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) signed a partnership agreement for the sponsorship of the annual CAF Player of the Year Awards. The attendant glamour of the ceremonies organized by Globacom has since elevated the awards, hitherto a footnote in Africa’s football calendar, to a major event in the global football chart.

The GLO-CAF Awards has been attended by global football bigwigs like Sepp Blatter, the FIFA President, Mitchel Platini, the UEFA President and Alhaji Isa Hayatou, the CAF President. Blatter once described the event, which had a unique blend of pan-African dance, music and choreography, as the best award ceremony he had witnessed. The Glo-CAF Awards has so far been held in Nigeria, Ghana and Togo.
