DON’T PLAY POLITICS WITH THE LIVES OF NIGERIANS-OBANIKORO WARNS APC

The Minister of State for Defence,  Amb. Musiliu Obanikoro has urged the opposition All Progressives Congress to desist from politicking with the insecurity in the country, noting that the situation deserves the attention and support of all Nigerians
Obanikoro who was on Channels TV Flagship programme, Sunrise Daily stated “ We can play politics but we should not play politics with the lives of our people”
He noted that Nigerians needed to support the efforts of the security agencies because according to him security was not about the security agencies but about the people. “ if the security agencies do not get the quality of support that they require from the people and the society at large, there would be nothing they can do”
Providing explanation for the ease with which the sect, known for driving in large convoys of vehicles, carry out their operations despite the State of Emergency and consequent curfew in the states, Obanikoro said that there could not have been ease of passage for these terrorists if there were no local collaborators.
.He however used the opportunity to praise the support of the civilian JTF and some natives whom he noted had contributed to the success so far recorded.
On the Cooperation of neighbouring states, Amb. Obanikoro  noted that based on his experience as a former envoy to Ghana, it was not unreasonable to suggest that the kind of relationship and collaboration that should exist between neighbouring countries in Africa do not exist presently.
He stated that the Nigerian government was doing so much on its own, and it was incumbent on our neighbours in the West African Corridor to contribute their quota by also taking action from their own end.
He also explained that the damage done to the telecommunication infrastructure in the region has also limited the help that the military could get to that which the local communities could give, if they were willing to join hands with the military to win the battle.
On the recent abduction of secondary school Girls, Obanikoro wondered why the school was open in the first place “Before now the Borno State Government directed all schools in the state to be closed. Why was this particular school open? He wanted to know why the girls were not relocated to take their exams if indeed the exam was important.
He stated that the Boko Haram sect have in recent times switched their terror activities to soft targets like schools and motor parks  which shows that the FG was making progress in its fight against the terrorists. Adding that the terrorists have been pushed away from highly populated areas
Obanikoro urged better cooperation from the State Governments in the North, particularly demanding that communication from both authorities should be in tandem with the Federal Government’s efforts and should project cooperation between both tiers of Government.
He expressed disappointment at the statement of the Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako where he compared the military activities in the North to the actions of Adolf Hitler. “This kind of statement should not be coming from a former Chief of Naval Staff, let alone an elected governor and representative of the people.
