Coroner Gives Final Deadline For Synagogue Inquest

Chief Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe, the Coroner presiding over the Lagos State Coroners Court sitting in Ikeja, on Tuesday insisted that the inquest investigating the collapse of a six-storey guesthouse owned by the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), would be concluded next month.

The Coroner gave the assurance at the resumed hearing into the inquest which was stalled due to the absence of SCOAN’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo.

Komolafe informed parties present in court that Ojo had sent in a letter praying the court for an adjournment.

The court said Ojo had claimed in his letter that he was appearing in another case at the Federal High Court and had pleaded with the inquest to vacate the dates fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Komolafe said: “This court cannot continue indefinitely. I just want to say that I am not going to sit for more than two weeks.

“Anybody that will not come during that period, we will skip his or her testimony and move ahead.”

The matter has however been adjourned till February 26, 2015 for cross-examination of Mr. Sunday Okogie, SCOAN’s Chief Security Officer.

The inquest was set up by the Lagos State Government to unravel the cause of the collapse of the six-storey building owned by SCOAN, which occurred on September 12, 2014, killing 116 persons.
