SA U19 coach Lawrence Mahatlane has been appointed as the head coach of Uganda’s national team, the Cricket Cranes.Uganda Cricket confirmed on Twitter their new head coach last week and revealed that Mahatlane signed a three-year deal.According to Cricket Uganda’s website, Mahatlane replaces former Kenya captain Steve Tikolo.”After 24 years of coaching at all levels in SA, I felt this was the right time to take a step in a different direction. Uganda was very appealing,” Mahatlane told their team’s official website.”I have followed the team for a while and I believe there are some good youngsters that could play for the national team. Within the senior team, there are some good solid players who can take the team to the next level.”In 2014, Mahatlane replaced former Proteas coach Ray Jennings as the SA U19 coach job.During his tenure, South Africa failed to reach a U19 World Cup semi-final. Mahatlane’s last assignment was year’s 2020 U19 World Cup, where the hosts finished a disappointing eighth.Mahatlane took a young Wiaan Mulder and Lutho Sipamla to the 2016 U19 World Cup in Bangladesh, the duo have since made multiple appearances for the Proteas.Director of Cricket Graeme Smith will have the opportunity to replace Mahatlane’s vacant role.BREAKING NEWS: NEW COACH ALERT!Welcome Our New Head Coach Lawrence Mahatlane.Mahatlane joins the Cricket Cranes on a three year deal.
