Akwa Ibom Council of Chiefs gets new Chairman


The Paramount Ruler Ibeno Local Government Area His Royal Majesty Owong Effiong Bassey Archianga has been sworn -in as the new Chairman,  Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs. He replaces, Edidem Silas Akpan.

The State Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel who administered the oath of office on the new Chairman commended the peaceful transition heralding the emergence of Dr Effiong Archianga as  chairman to conduct the affairs of the State Council of Chiefs.

He described the reign of the out-going Chairman, Edidem Silas Akpan as rewarding stressing that he had restored dignity to the traditional institution by aligning the council with the lofty programmes of  government.

The Governor noted that the event which is an integral part of activities marking the 28th anniversary celebration of the State Creation also redirects attention and emphasized the importance of the traditional institution.

Governor Emmanuel described the Royal fathers  as partners in the development drive of his administration and called on them to entrench the ideals of peace and order in their domain by eschewing acts that would contravene the sanctity of the traditional institution

.”You are taking the staff of office at the time our state is on the path of industrialization, job creation and all round development. You are to use your staff of office as a good Shepherd and show direction that will enhance development in line with the dream of the government “Governor Emmanuel stated

He said that the presentation of staff of office to Edidem Archianga confers on him the authority to pilot the affairs of the traditional Rulers Council in the state and enjoined him to discharge his duties with decorum. He assured the Royal fathers of enhanced welfare package.

Earlier the Commissioner for Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Victor Antai thanked the Governor for his profound concern on the welfare of the traditional institution and called the royal fathers to reciprocate government’s magnanimity  by ensuring that peace reign in their domain. Mr Antai congratulated the new tnew Chairman and wished him a successful tenure in office.

The outgoing Chairman His Royal Majesty Edidem Edem Akpan   said his tenure recorded relative peace and attributed his successful reign to the support which he enjoyed from his colleagues.

He however decried attempt by some elements who sponsored malicious publications to smear the image of the Council of Chiefs and pitch the government against the revered Institution. He  said he had forgiven them and advised them to desist from such acts as he noted such actions will not fetch them any good.

While calling on Politicians to desist from desecrating the Royal institution by bringing it into the political arena, Edidem Akpan thanked Governor Emmanuel for sustaining the welfare package approved for them by the erstwhile administration and congratulated his successor, Edidem Archianga.

The new Chairman Edidem Archianga who described his new office as a call to higher responsibility said he would consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, maintain peace and work for the realisation of the divine mandate of Governor Emmanuel’s administration.
